Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB) released the final report on the investigation of the recreational fishing vessel “CHAU YEAU NO.1” caught fire while entering the security check area at Jiangjun fishing harbor.

On 22 June 2024, a Taiwan flag recreational fishing vessel “CHAU YEAU NO.1”, registration number CT2-6502 with a gross tonnage of 19.99, had 2 crew members and 7 passengers on board, caught fire while entering the security check area at Jiangjun fishing harbor. The hull of “CHAU YEAU NO.1” was burned out. No injury or oil pollution occurred in this occurrence.

Following Taiwan's Transportation Occurrence Investigation Act and the Casualty Investigation Code of the International Maritime Organization, the TTSB is an independent transportation occurrence investigation agency and is responsible for conducting this occurrence investigation. The investigation team also included members from the Maritime and Port Bureau Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Fisheries Agency Ministry of Agriculture, and shipowner.

Based on the available factual information and analysis, it was concluded that the fire’s point of origin “CHAU YEAU NO.1” was located at the ceiling on the port side of the engine room. Due to an electrical short circuit, the surrounding combustibles were ignited. The fire was too large and could not be extinguished in time, causing “CHAU YEAU NO.1” to burn down. This case is classified as a Class 3 report*.

This final report was reviewed and approved by the 69th TTSB Board Meeting on November 8th, 2024.
