The Initial Press Release of Occurrence of a Passenger Car Rear-Ending a Rental Passenger Car on Northbound Sanyi Section of Freeway No. 1
On August 19, 2026, at 1025, a rental passenger car rear-ended a preceding electric passenger car in the inner lane at the 147k mark on the northbound Sanyi section of Freeway No.1. No injuries were reported in this occurrence. Subsequently, at 1029, another passenger car collided with the stationary rental passenger car in the inner lane, pushing it forward into the electric passenger car. This secondary collision resulted in three fatalities and two injuries.
Upon receiving notification of the occurrence, the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB) immediately dispatched three investigators to the site to collect information in accordance with the procedures for investigating highway occurrences. This event was identified by the TTSB as a highway occurrence in accordance with the Transportation Occurrence Investigation Act. An official investigation has been launched and the investigation team will continue to collect relevant evidence.
