Singapore Airlines, Flight SQ029, hit the tailstands as the aircraft taxied on Taxiway SS at Chiang Kai-Shek International Airport

Description

On July 19, 2002, a Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400 aircraft, Flight SQ029, registration number 9V-SPB, conducted a schedule passenger flight from Chiang Kai-Shek International Airport to Singapore Chang-I International Airport.


The SQ029 Captain (CM-1) acting as PNF (pilot not flying). The First Officer (CM-2) acting as PF (pilot flying), performed engine start, taxi, and take off duties, etc. At 7:10 AM local time, SQ029 started push back from Bay C6 onto Taxiway SS. At 0717:35 SQ029 requested and received taxi clearance: Singapore two nine taxi to runway two four via taxiway sierra five sierra papa. As the aircraft taxied on Taxiway SS after abeam Remote Apron 612 and 611, made an early right turn onto Remote Apron 610 prior to Taxiway S5. As the aircraft continued to taxi, the right wing hit the two tailstands (6 meters high, made of metal material. used for aircraft tail structure support while loading and unloading), then made a left turn onto Taxiway SP and took off on Runway 24. The reported weather at the time of this incident occurred at C.K.S. International Airport was VMC with visibility over 10 km.


After deliberation, the 46th council meeting of the Aviation Safety Council (ASC), Republic of China (ROC), decided that the ASC, rather than Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA), ROC, should be investigating this incident.
