Description

A TransAsia Airways’ ATR-72 aircraft, registered B22810 departed from Taipei Sungshan Airport, as flight GE517 at 18:13 local time(LT), Sept.5,2002 on a scheduled passenger transportation service to Makung Airport. There were 43 passengers, 2 cabin crew and 2 flight crew on board. GE517 conducted an initial climb to approximately 500 ft, ATC controller informed the flight crew No.2 engine tailpipe fire. In the mean time flight instruments signaled No.2 engine fire alarm. The flight crew shut down No.2 engine and discharged fire bottle. At 18:39 LT GE517 landed safely at Taipei Sungshan Airport. All passengers and crewmembers aboard sustained no injury. Upon received the notification, Aviation Safety Council (ASC) of Taiwan, ROC brought both cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder for readout. The CVR indicated that cabin smoke occurred. ASC is conducting the investigation in accordance with Article 84 of Civil Aviation Law.
